Single Screw Extruder: Key Polymer Processing Equipment

A single screw extruder is one of the main types of machines used in polymer processing. Its primary function is to build up pressure in the polymer melt so the material can be pushed through a die to form the desired shape. Most single screw extruders perform plasticating, meaning they melt solid resin pellets or powders inside the screw under pressure and heat. Additionally, some single screw extruders are designed to aid in mixing polymer materials.

Components of a Single Screw Extruder

A typical single screw extruder consists of several key parts:

  • Screw: Continuously rotates to push resin forward.

  • Barrel: Heated to melt the polymer.

  • Drive Mechanism: Powers the screw rotation.

  • Resin Feed System: Feeds pellets or powder into the machine.

  • Control Systems: Manage temperature, pressure, and speed.

As the screw turns inside the heated barrel, it moves the solid polymer through, gradually melting it into a homogeneous molten state. The screw creates back pressure, forcing the molten polymer out through the die in the desired shape.

Barrier Screw: Solving Incomplete Melting Issues

Sometimes, the polymer does not fully melt in a basic single screw extruder. To solve this, barrier screws are used. These screws have additional flights in the transition zone to separate solid and molten plastic into different channels. As solid pellets move forward, they melt by shearing against the barrel wall and then flow into the molten channel. Gradually, the solid channel narrows while the molten channel widens, improving melting efficiency and product quality.

Evaluating Screw Performance

The performance of an extrusion screw refers to its ability to produce high-quality products efficiently and cost-effectively. During the design phase, engineers carefully evaluate screw geometry to optimize the balance between melting, mixing, and pressure buildup. The amount of material deformation (stretching) increases linearly with the screw channel length, affecting the final product properties.
